Updated: Dec 8, 2021

New fund Perform Europe grants EU-wide project “The Body as Reference for (R)Evolution" with Gothenburg Fringe Festival as presenting partners in Febauary/March 2022.

Title: The Body as Reference for (R) Evolution – Biotopes

European Partners: United Cowboys (Netherlands), UA Association ‘Contemporary Dance Platform’ (Ukraine), ACT - Association for Independent Theatre (Bulgaria), Gothenburg Fringe Festival (Sweden)

The Body as Reference for (R)Evolution represents a new collaboration in the frame of Perform Europe – a EU-funded project which aims to rethink cross-border performing arts presentation in a more inclusive, sustainable and balanced way.

This project emphasises the human dimension, the physical, in times of technology and digitalised dialogues also promoting the tangibility of all senses and bringing live experiences back into focus.

The three presenting partners have invited United Cowboys to execute and develop their Biotope concept in a chain of performances, that take along local artists, selected materials and content from each city to the next, and presenting these in relevant, unconventional locations.

The Biotope format is a site-specific piece, an immersive, sculptural durational performance.

It is a highly inclusive, collaborative format that can be transferred to various contexts.

To co-shape the individual Biotopes on location, United Cowboys will host proceeding artistic working sessions.

Gothenburg Fringe will host United Cowboys for a week-long artistic process, culminating in a public performance on Saturday 5 March 2022.

This will be a highlight in a weekend of performances showcased by Gothenburg Fringe on 4-6 March in the first of its year-round programme of events.

United Cowboys is a dance-performance company and Art House that works, with a collective of international artists under the guidance of a dedicated artistic team. United Cowboys is the leading organisation in the Eu-project. Inspired by a variety of art forms, United Cowboys creates multidisciplinary performances, on the border of dance, performance music, video and installation art mainly in national and international collaboration. It also manages an art house in the city centre of Eindhoven which functions as an international platform for artistic creation, artist residencies and as the main venue for the quarterly public micro-festival “Seasoning”, which is open to local and international artists and audiences. Encounters and exchange of artists among each other and with their (future) audience are always in the light of investigation, production, presentation and reflection.

The two artistic directors, Maarten van der Put (concept, direction, scenery) and Pauline Roelants (choreography and concept) - both create dance- and performance work that lead, in discussion with each other, to all the artistic choices and to the consequences of the various projects and productions.

More about Perform Europe

Perform Europe is an EU-funded project which aims to rethink cross-border performing arts presentation in a more inclusive, sustainable and balanced way.

The project is an 18-month journey, which includes a research phase, launching a digital platform and an open call for producers and presenters of performing arts works, testing a support scheme, and designing policy recommendations. The ultimate goal of Perform Europe is to design a future support scheme for cross-border touring and digital distribution of the performing arts in Creative Europe countries.

During a two-step application process, participants were selected and new projects were initiated in partnership. In the second step, while and after participating in the learning and networking process, applicants selected in step 1 shaped partnerships among each other, co-created touring and distribution proposals and applied for a Perform Europe grant.
